Week in Review : January 20th -23rd

Lower Elementary students were busy at work during this short week! Students had a great time completing language, math, and cultural jobs!

For language jobs, first grade students were introduced to suffixes, discussed the basic story elements (settings, characters, and plot), and used the grammar symbols to symbolize a sentence.  Second graders wrote sentences with prefixes, reviewed plural possessive nouns, worked with adverbs, and reviewed story elements. Third grade students reviewed homophones/homographs/homonyms, worked with plural possessive nouns, identified pronouns within a sentence, discussed fact vs. opinion, and identified the story elements from their Great Books story - "The Princess and the Beggar".

For math jobs,  first grade students used the stamp game to solve multiplication problems, practiced their multiplication skills, and used rulers to measure objects in inches. The second graders solved subtraction problems, found the missing number in subtraction sentences, and reviewed how to measure the length of objects. Third graders had continued work with the four math operations and practiced how to convert basic measurement units (inches, feet, yards, miles) from one to the other by using multiplication and division.

For cultural jobs, students continued their study of Argentina. Students watched short clips about life and culture in Argentina. Students continued their study of compound machines by participating in four hands-on activities designed to help them label, create, and explore compound machines! Students also learned about the layers of the atmosphere and drew each section on a piece of paper.

Next week, we look forward to continuing our study of measurement, adding/subtracting/multiplying fractions, working with grammar, and much more!

Reminders
Homework is sent home each Monday and due by Friday. Please have your child read each night for at least 30 minutes and record the title in his or her reading log.

Dates

January 29th- Parent's Night 6:30-7:30

Come out to Parent's Night where your child is the teacher! Students have worked hard to select and practice their favorite jobs so that they can teach them to you. This a great opportunity to see what your child does at school each day and to become more familiar with the Montessori materials we use in class. We hope to see you there!
