Week in Review : January 25th- 29th

We had a wonderful week in Lower Elementary! The students diligently practiced their self-selected jobs for Parent's Night all week. Thank you to all who came out for Parent's Night! The students took great pride in their role as teachers!

In addition to practicing for Parent's Night, students received a presentation on the different types of roots a plant can have. Did you know that a potato isn't actually a root, but a sweet potato is? Students were fully engaged in our discussion and also enjoyed observing the radish seeds that have sprouted in the classroom. Students also finished their study of the American Revolution by watching a movie about a young Colonial girl living in the American Colonies in 1775.

This week, students will be introduced to decimals, explore the use of commas within a sentence, continue their study of linear measurement, and solve riddles involving the geometric solids. It will be a wonderful week!

Even though it was a short week, students were hard at work! Students received many presentations on new material and had opportunities to practice previously learned skills.

For language jobs, first grade students symbolized sentences containing verbs and had further practice with contractions. Second grade students had further work with comparative adjectives ( using the words more and most), reviewed contractions, and used a pronunciation key to decode words. Third grade students were introduced to the use of an apostrophe in a singular possessive noun, used a pronunciation key to decode words, and reviewed contractions.

For math jobs, first grade students solved large multiplication problems, converted improper fractions to mixed numbers, were introduced to ordinal numbers, made quadrilaterals with the stick box, and measured lines using centimeters. Second grade students solved subtraction problems by using the bead frame, subtracted fractions and measured the perimeter of the quadrilateral shapes found in the geometry cabinet. Third grade students practiced all math operations, multiplied fractions, and found the perimeter and area of rectangles and squares.

For cultural jobs, students conducted research on a famous person from the American Revolution in history. In science, students discussed the parts of a plant (specifically the roots) and planted radish seeds to watch how the roots grow. In geography, students continued their study of the Lakes and Rivers of the 13 colonies.

Next week, students will be busy in preparation for Parent's Night on this Thursday, January 28th. Students will select jobs to present, practice those jobs, and help prepare the environment for this exciting evening. We hope you can join us!
