Week in Review : February 22nd - 26th

We had another wonderful week in Lower Elementary! Students worked very hard to complete their quarterly reviews (which covered material presented in Language Arts and Math this quarter). It was wonderful to see how much the students have learned this quarter! Students also worked with sight words, practiced telling time and calculating elapsed time, counting money, and solving word problems.

For cultural jobs this week, students worked on their "Mind Maps" of South Africa and Germany. "Mind Maps" are a way to express main ideas and details of a central theme or image through the use of pictures and words. Students worked in groups to create a "Mind Map" of the country they studied in preparation for the International Festival. On Friday, students presented their "Mind Maps" to the entire Lower Elementary! It was wonderful to see what they learned!

Next week, students will review concepts such as editing, solving word problems, identifying parts of speech, working with all math operations, and measuring the length of objects in standard and metric units. It will be a great week!

Week in Review: February 8th - 12th

We had a wonderful week in Lower Elementary! The third graders performed a play for us based on one of the books they read in Great Books. The highlight of our week was our Valentine's Day party! Thanks to all who helped make the day special!

For language jobs this week, first grade students matched animal names to their sounds, practiced dictionary skills, read poetry, and edited sentences for capitalization, commas, and punctuation. Second grade students were introduced to pronouns, explored analogies, read poetry, and edited sentences for commas. Third grade students analyzed sentences, reviewed plural possessive nouns, read poetry, and edited sentences .

For math jobs, first students practiced multiplication, were introduced to the commutative property, added fractions, explored polygons, and practiced measuring items in centimeters and inches. Second grade students explored subtraction over zero, practiced column addition, were introduced to the commutative and associative properties, measured the perimeter of polygons, and practiced some simple measurement conversions. Third graders practiced all math operations, constructed numbers containing decimals, were introduced to the commutative, associative, and identity properties, explored congruent figures, and practiced measurement conversions.

For cultural jobs, students continued their study of South Africa and Germany. Students learned about the animals, holidays, clothings, and exports from the two countries. Join us for the International Festival on Saturday from 3-6 to see what we have learned.

Week in Review: February 1th -5th

It was a great week in Lower Elementary! Students have been very busy in and out of the classroom! Students especially enjoyed a fencing demonstration during P.E. time this week. Thanks to Coach Brad for bringing such a fun demonstration to JBMA!

For language jobs this week, first graders worked matched animals and their sounds and were introduced to basic uses for commas. Second grade students worked with comparative adjectives and explored various uses for commas. Third grade students identified the subject and predicate of sentences, identified plural possessive nouns, and used commas to separate nouns in a series within a sentence.

For math jobs this week, first grade students worked with multiplication facts and large multiplication problems, were introduced to feet and yards, converted improper fractions to mixed numbers, and solved riddles describing geometric solids. Second grade students worked with large subtraction problems, reviewed column addition using the Dot Game, measured items in feet and yards, and solved riddles describing geometric solids.

For cultural lessons, students continued their study of plants by taking a closer look at the different types of stems in science. Students also began their historical and geographical study of South Africa and Germany. Students were introduced to basic facts about the countries and identified various geographical features. We look forward to sharing this information during the International Festival!

Next week, students will be busy editing their writing, reviewing grammar symbols, measuring the length of items, and exploring concepts in geometry! It will be a wonderful week filled with learning and a bit of fun! Our Valentine's Day Party will be on Friday, February 12th at 1:30!
