Week in Review: February 24th-28th

We had another great week in Lower Elementary! We were busy at work!  

For language jobs this week,  First grade students discussed the difference between a phrase and a sentence, worked with verbs, and reviewed ABC order and syllables. Second grade students compared the differences between homophones/homographs/and homonyms, wrote sentences with prepositions, and reviewed ABC order and syllables.  Third grade students reviewed homophones/homographs/and homonyms, completed a pronoun chart, and reviewed ABC order and syllables.  

For math jobs this week,  First grade students had continued practice with multiplication, determined if larger numbers were odd or even, and answered questions by using data from bar graphs. Second grade students had more practice with subtraction, reviewed even and odd, and worked with expanded notation. Third grade students worked with division, reviewed even and odd, and were introduced to scientific notation.


In Science, students began a study of heat. We watched as Ms. Rachel inflated a balloon using hot air trapped in a beaker! We discussed vocabulary terms such as temperature, conductor, and insulator. 


In History, students continued their research on the famous African American of their choice. Students will research the childhood, education, and contributions of the person they chose.

Next week, students will be busy at work reading sight words, finishing jobs, and completing third quarter reviews. Our third grade students are very excited to go to Camp McDowell from Monday to Wednesday.!



REMINDERS:
-All homework is typically sent home on Monday and is to be completed during the week. It is due on Friday. Students will be given Spelling tests and Math Timed tests in class every Friday. 

-The sign up sheet for conferences is now up outside Classroom 3! Please stop by and sign up for a conference time!

-Come see our school presentation of School House Rock!  7:00 THIS Friday, February 28th!
-Progress Reports will be sent home on Wednesday, March 12th.

Week in Review: February 18-21

We had a great week in Lower Elementary! We were busy at work practicing for the Peace Ceremony and Parent's Night. We enjoyed reading our peace poems at the ceremony and presenting our favorite jobs during Parent's Night!

For language jobs this week,  First grade students completed a word study job of their choice and created sentences with verbs, articles, adjectives, and nouns. Second grade students completed a word study job of their choice and created sentences with prepositions.  Third grade students completed a word study job of their choice and continued working with sentence analysis.

For math jobs this week,  First grade students were introduced to multiplication and worked with adding fractions . Second grade students had further practice with subtracting large numbers and had continued work with adding and subtracting fractions. Third grade students had further practice with solving division problems with larger numbers and multiplying fractions.


In Science, students continued their study of light. This week, we completed four stations which explored reflection, refraction, the light spectrum, and classifying materials as transparent, translucent, or opaque.


In History, students continued their study famous African Americans in honor Black History month. Students began research on the famous African American of their choice. Students will research the childhood, education, and contributions of the person they chose.

Next week, students will be busy at work using expanded notation, working with syllables, and identifying/using/and creating graphs!

Week in Review : February 3rd-7th

We had a great week in Lower Elementary! We were busy at work! We especially enjoyed our trip to the Children's Theater to see the play The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

For language jobs this week,  First grade students reviewed punctuation (period and question mark), worked on how to summarize a story, and discussed capitalizations of days and months. Second grade students reviewed punctuation (period, question marks, and exclamation points) as a way to identify types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative), discussed plural possessive words, and worked with contractions.  Third grade students were introduced to quotation marks, discussed cause and effect, and had continued work with contractions.

For math jobs this week,  First grade reviewed quadrilateral shapes, continued counting coins, and had further work with addition. Second grade students worked with subtracting, identified quadrilaterals by reading their definitions, and also worked with word problems involving money. Third grade students measured the perimeter of quadrilaterals, solved money word problems by making change, and worked with division using the stamp game and test tube .


In Geography, students used atlases and other research materials to identify the major rivers of North America .


In Science, students continued their study of light. This week, we discussed reflection, refraction, and the visible light spectrum during an interactive Smartboard lesson.


In History, students continued their study of famous African Americans in celebration of Black History month. Students researched the contributions of these famous African Americans and then created a stamp to represent them.

Next week, students will be busy at work using thesauruses, solving problems by adding, subtracting, or multiplying fractions, and will work with telling time. We look forward to our Valentine's Day party on Friday!
