Dear Parents,
Won't be able to make field day, but wished you could?  Make sure you order this years yearbook to see all the highlights your children will be telling you about. Our yearbook captures the fun and excitement that your child has been experiencing all year long. The yearbook staff has been putting a lot of work and a lot of fun into this year's yearbook. So there will be no doubt your son or daughter can't wait to get their hands on it. They'll collect friends' signatures and delight at the pictures. For years to come, the yearbook will be a special souvenir of their activities, classes and friends.

It's also the perfect time for you to choose an ad for them, congratulating them on their efforts for a year well done. I know as the parent of a child at Bruno Montessori, they will be be thrilled to have a space in the book, dedicated just to them.

Please take this time to fill out an order form for the yearbook and/or ads for your child.
At this time estimate the cost of each book to be $45. As parents, we can reduce the cost of each book by purchasing display ads in the yearbook. Please find a flyer in the front office (and soon in your child's folder) that will provide the information on the different options available for placing an ad in the yearbook. You can also access this information on the web at www.jsbrunoyearbook.com
The yearbook staff will be available to take your orders and answer any questions you may have. You can contact me by emailing me at: dana.maxfield@jsbrunoyearbook.com or calling me at 205-422-8549. I look forward to creating memories and working with everyone in making this a great year.

The Joseph S. Bruno Montessori Academy Yearbook is a memory that our children will cherish for many years to come.
Sincerely,
Dana Maxfield

Oobleck

Oobleck

Ingredients & materials:
1 baggie
cornstarch
water
food coloring (optional, as could stain clothing and skin)

Procedure:

1.     Measure exactly ¼ cup cornstarch (white powder) using the stick to scrape off extra from the top into the bowl.  Put the cornstarch into a plastic baggie.

2.    Touch the dry cornstarch powder and notice the interesting texture.

3.    Measure 1 TBSP (tablespoon) of water and put into the baggie with the cornstarch.

4.    Mix the cornstarch and water together with your fingers really well.  If there is still dry cornstarch, add ½ tsp (teaspoon) water to the mixture.  Mix the cornstarch and water together with your fingers.  If it is still dry, you may add  another ½ tsp until the entire mixture is wet.

5.    Squeeze the mixture and notice it feels like a solid then watch it drip through your fingers like a liquid. If you slowly lower your hand into oobleck, it will sink, but it is difficult to quickly remove your hand (without taking all the oobleck and its container with you).  If you squeeze or punch the oobleck, the starch particles will not move out of the way quickly, so the oobleck will feel solid.  Oobleck can be molded in a container, but when the mold is removed, the oobleck will lose its shape.

**DO NOT put this mixture down the sink – only in the trash can**

Clean up: Warm water will quickly get it off your hands; it will brush off of clothes when it dries, and it is easily cleaned off surfaces with a wet rag.  Important: Make sure you do not dump the goo down the drain – it can get caught in the drain trap and take the joy out of your day of science. Dump it in the trash, or even mix it into soil in the garden.

Our Valentine’s Day party is scheduled for Tuesday, February 14, 2012. We have a tradition of sending valentines to our friends in school.  Your child should just sign the valentine cards and not address them to specific individuals. We have 60 students. As part of our Valentine exchange, the children have the option of decorating a box or bag to hold their Valentines.  This activity needs to be done at home. It is optional, but recommended. Your child will need something to put his/her valentines in to take them home.
Currently in the cultural areas we are studying:
History – Ancient civilizations, their numbers, and calendars
Geography – Research of a country where ancient civilizations were located
Science – Human body parts associated with each sense; simple machines

Some dates of importance:
·        Our school play, February 10th, Aladdin,
·        Monday, February 20th is President’s day ß school is closed
