Week in Review: January 13-17

Another great week was had in Lower Elementary!

For language jobs this week,  First grade students made connections to the text -Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, were introduced to verbs, and explored the parts and functions of a dictionary. Second grade students reviewed the character, setting, and plot of a story, were introduced to prepositions, and reviewed dictionary skills.  Third grade students analyzed sentences, located adverbs within a text, and reviewed dictionary skills.

For math jobs this week,  First grade students practiced adding three three-digit  numbers (column addition), located missing variables within addition equations, and had a blast measuring objects with their foot! Second grade students used rounding to estimate the sum of two numbers, reviewed subtraction, and answered questions by analyzing a tally mark graph. Third grade students explored numbers to the 2nd power, located missing subtrahends and minuends (missing variables within addition and subtraction sentences), and answered questions by analyzing data from bar, line, and circle graphs.

In Geography, students explored more advanced land and water forms by completing a set of three part cards. Students had to match the name, picture, and definition of  land and water forms such as fjord, reservoir, and estuary (to name a few!)

In History, students continued their unit on Peace Education. Students heard a story about and discussed the life and work of Gandhi. After hearing several poems about peace, students wrote their own acrostic poem about peace!

In Science, students continued their short unit on magnetism by working with magnets and the magnetic field in stations. Students tested the strength of the magnetic field, explored the attraction and repulsion of the magnetic poles, and even magnetized a nail!

Next week, students will be busy! They will continue learning about peace, practice telling time, work with addition, subtraction, and division, and learn the parts of a river!
