Week in Review : February 3rd-7th

We had a great week in Lower Elementary! We were busy at work! We especially enjoyed our trip to the Children's Theater to see the play The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

For language jobs this week,  First grade students reviewed punctuation (period and question mark), worked on how to summarize a story, and discussed capitalizations of days and months. Second grade students reviewed punctuation (period, question marks, and exclamation points) as a way to identify types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative), discussed plural possessive words, and worked with contractions.  Third grade students were introduced to quotation marks, discussed cause and effect, and had continued work with contractions.

For math jobs this week,  First grade reviewed quadrilateral shapes, continued counting coins, and had further work with addition. Second grade students worked with subtracting, identified quadrilaterals by reading their definitions, and also worked with word problems involving money. Third grade students measured the perimeter of quadrilaterals, solved money word problems by making change, and worked with division using the stamp game and test tube .

In Geography, students used atlases and other research materials to identify the major rivers of North America .

In Science, students continued their study of light. This week, we discussed reflection, refraction, and the visible light spectrum during an interactive Smartboard lesson.

In History, students continued their study of famous African Americans in celebration of Black History month. Students researched the contributions of these famous African Americans and then created a stamp to represent them.

Next week, students will be busy at work using thesauruses, solving problems by adding, subtracting, or multiplying fractions, and will work with telling time. We look forward to our Valentine's Day party on Friday!
